Chapter 11

Willa unfolded the note card and read. “Among the jackets and coats, they’ll hide in here. Your past has many of these, I fear. But be careful and grab the right one. Touch too many and your breathing days are done.”

“First of all,” I said, “let’s step away from the spider.” The three of us walked toward the stairs. “So what are we thinking about the clue?”

Before we could say anything, a scream reverberated throughout the house.

“That sounded like Rose,” I said.

“Let’s go!” Aunt Shirley shoved Willa down the stairs. “Get a move on, girl!”

Aunt Shirley and I clambered down the attic stairs after Willa, barely pausing for me to shut the attic door. I heard Grant’s voice at the bottom of the foyer stairs, frantically asking what was wrong. We scrambled down the stairs as Grant continued to get Rose’s attention. But Rose either didn’t hear him or couldn’t comprehend what he was saying, because she kept looking down at her hands and whimpering.

I ran over to Rose, grabbed her by the elbows, and gave her a small shake.

“Rose?” I called. “What’s wrong?”

Tears fell from her eyes as she whimpered. “Hurts.”

“Hurt. Pain.” Sal gasped.

I took in his pale, sweaty complexion. He still looked as bad as he did a few minutes ago, but I swear his breathing was worse. “Are you talking about Rose or you?”

“Both.” He closed his eyes, staggered backward into the wall, and slid down onto the floor.

“Holy crap!” Aunt Shirley said. “I don’t think this is part of the scavenger hunt.”

Grant pushed his way through our small crowd and stood next to me. “Someone read the clue that was in their envelope. Maybe we can get an idea of what is going on.”

Willa bent down and picked up the card off the floor. “It’s the same as the one we just found in the attic. ‘Among the jackets and coats, they’ll hide in here. Your past has many of these, I fear. But be careful and grab the right one. Touch too many and your breathing days are done.’ Exactly like our clue.”

“And since they’re standing in front of a closet with a skeleton inside,” Edward said, “I assume they found their first clue.”

Edward reached out to touch the skeleton, but Grant knocked his hand away. “I wouldn’t touch that, sir. I’m not exactly sure, but I think I know what the problem is.”

“What?” I demanded.

Grant shook his head in confusion. “This is so surreal. If you look at the skeleton, all the bones are plastic, except for the skull. That’s a real human skull.”

Willa screamed and stumbled backward, hitting her back and head against the wall. She then dropped down onto the floor next to Sal.

“Wonderful,” Aunt Shirley muttered. “Now we got three people incapacitated—four if you count Victoria.”

“You’re sure that’s a human skull?” I asked Grant.

He nodded. “Yes. But the bones are just cheap plastic bones.”

Rose held up her hands to me. “They hurt. Burn.”

Grant glanced down at Rose’s fingers and blanched. “Oh, my goodness! I think I know what’s happened.
